John Robert Payne (c.1929-2010)

Jun 01, 2010 - 08:35:25 pm CDT John Robert Payne, 81, of Raleigh, died Monday, May 31, 2010 at Duke Health Raleigh. Graveside Funeral Service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at Montlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Montlawn Funeral Home from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Thursday prior to the service. A native of Rockingham County, John was the son of the late Thomas Jess Payne and Mamie McBride Payne. He was a retired technician with Dover Elevator Co. with over 40 years of service and served many years as the business agent for the IUEC. John was a member of Hudson Memorial Presbyterian Church and served his country in the United States Air Force.
John is survived by three sons, John Robert, Jr., and his wife Pattie of Raleigh, Lynn and his wife Laurie of Swansboro, Dean and his wife Lisa of Cary; daughter, Joan Baysden and her husband Phillip of Ernul; eight grandchildren, Heather Petersen and her husband Mel of Reidsville, John III and his wife Christy of Apex, Chad and his wife Heather of Winterville, Trent Payne of Swansboro, Taylor and Chelsea Payne of Cary, and Bobby and Bryan Baysden of Ernul. John is also survived by three great grandchildren; Connor and Camryn Payne of Apex and Carter Petersen of Reidsville; sisters, Virginia Rakestraw and Martha Alley; brother, Lacy Payne and a brother in-law, George Byrd.

John was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Mary Elizabeth Byrd Payne; sisters, Mildred Apple, Dorothy Moore and a brother in-law, Walter Byrd.
