Caswell County Female Political Candidates

Female Candidates For many years, a female candidate running for Caswell County elective office was a novelty.

Bessie Thompson (1870-1955) surely was among the first. In 1922, she entered the Caswell County Democratic primary for NC state senator. She lost to Robert T. Wilson (1883-1952) 721 to 219.

In 1962, Frances Anne Gatewood Poteat (1931-1998) ran against Edward Howell Wilson (1916-1998) in the Democratic primary for the NC Legislature. She lost.

Maud Florance Gatewood (1934-2004) was elected in 1976 as the first female member of the Caswell County Board of Commissioners and served as chairperson until 1980.

Cathy Lynn Walker Lucas served on the Caswell County Board of Commissioners.

Margie Denise Badgett-Lampkin (1954-2022) was elected to the Yanceyville Town Council and served as Mayor Pro Tem.
