Thomas Earl McLaughlin (c.1936 - 2010)

Thomas Earl Mc Laughlin of 74 Friendly Road (Reidsville, North Carolina) died Sunday. As a native and lifelong resident of Caswell County, he attended the local public schools and was a graduate of Caswell County High School, Class of 1968. Mr. Mc Laughlin was a former employee of Burlington Industries and was a member of Trinity Baptist Church where he served with the Board of Ushers. Survivors are: three sons, Thomas Maurice Simpson (Yolanda), Earl Cliford Mc Laughlin (Tonya), Troy Len Mc Laughlin (Crystal); 7 grandchildren; two sisters, Regina Gladen and Virginia Mc Laughlin; two aunts; sisters-in-law, Mozelle Graves Brown, Verleda Graves (Mark); brothers-in-law, Clifton Graves, Jr., Roy Mayo Graves (Beatrice); other relatives and friends.

Graveside services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Saturday from the Trinity Baptist Church Cemetery, Highway 150, Reidsville. The family may be contacted at 559 Foster Road, Yanceyville. Funeral arrangements are by Johnson & Sons.

David Carlton Francis (1929-2010)

David Carlton Francis, 80, of 285 Atwater Street, Yanceyville, NC, died Monday, May 3, 2010 at Kindred Hosp-ital, Greensboro, NC. Mr. Francis was born in Caswell County, North Carolina on August 28, 1929, the son of the late Alexander Francis and Haddie Thompson Francis.

A proclamation will be read, there will be a viewing of a short movie on the murder of Senator John W. The N.C. Museum of History in Raleigh has the nation’s largest collection of furniture made by Thomas Day, a free man of color who owned and operated one of North Carolina’s largest cabinet shops prior to the Civil War. On Saturday, May 22, the museum will open Behind the Veneer: Thomas Day, Master Cabinetmaker, a major exhibit showcasing approximately 70 pieces of furniture crafted by this accomplished artisan and entrepreneur from Milton, Caswell County. This 6,000-square-foot exhibit also explores the extraordinary story of a man who succeeded and flourished despite shrinking freedoms for free people of color in antebellum North Carolina.

Chandler Family Association Newsletter Wins First Place

First ever entry in prestigious National Genealogical Society competition

Hixson, TN, April 30, 2010 - The Chandler Family Association Newsletter received the First Place, Family Newsletter award at the recent National Genealogical Society meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah. The coveted award was presented April 28 in front of a large crowd of enthusiastic genealogists. Accepting the award on behalf of the Association was Charles Chandler, a resident of West Jordan, Utah, and CFA member. Editor of the award-winning newsletter is Claudia Chandler Brocato of Brandon, Mississippi, who was appointed editor of the publication in 2006. Brocato also serves as webmaster for the CFA website, which scored 84% in a recent marketing effectiveness evaluation of 2.3 million websites.

Sonny Lipscomb (c.1936-2006)

Milton — The funeral for Sonny Lipscomb, 70, of 10423 N. C. 62 North, Milton, who died Monday, April 3, 2006, will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, April 8, in the High Street Baptist Church in Milton by the Rev. Angel Lea. Burial will be in Floral Hill Memorial Gardens in Danville, Va. A native of Halifax County, where he attended public schools, Mr. Lipscomb was the son of the late Algie and Mary Ruth Brandon Lipscomb.
