William Herndon Allred (c.1938-2010)

Sept 21, 2010 - 07:24:58 pm CDT (The Caswell Messenger): Elon - Mr. William Herndon Allred, 72, of 116 Whitesell Drive, Elon died at UNC Hospitals on Sunday, September 19, 2010 at 4:05 p.m. following three months of failing health. A native of Caswell County, he was the husband of Isabella Kimbro Allred, who survives and the son of Samuel Thomas Allred and Lillie Herndon Allred, both deceased. He was a member of the North Carolina National Guard. Mr. Allred was employed with the Greensboro Housing Authority for 22 years. He was also a part-time farmer and part-time deliverer of the magazine, Triad Golf Today. William was a member of Concord Christian Church and the North State Boating Club.

On the 5th day of November A.D. 1833 personally appeared in open Court, before the Judge of Caswell Superior Court of Law now sitting, William Ware a resident of the said County of Caswell and State aforesaid aged seventy-three years, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of an act of Congress passed June 7th 1832.

On this 6th day of May 1833 personally appeared in open Court, Thomas Settle, Judge of the Superior Court of law of the County of Caswell now sitting -- presiding, John Ware Senior a resident citizen of the County of Caswell and State aforesaid aged seventy-eight years, on the 4th day of May Instant, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following Declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed June 7th 1832 -- That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers and served as herein stated -- Sometime in the year 1776, and this Declarant thinks in the month of January: But what day, he cannot now tell, he volunteered under Captain William Hubbird [sic, William Hubbard?], with others, in the Company under the command of Colonel William Moore, and was marched down on Cape Fear River below Fayetteville, towards & near to Wilmington for about this time, it was generally understood, that the Tories of South Carolina and from the South of our own State were about embodying with a view to march upon Wilmington & drive away our regular soldiers from that place.

On this the 19th November 1837, personally appeared before the undersigned an acting Justice of the Peace in and for the county of aforesaid, Nancy Byrd of Orange aforesaid widow of Thomas Byrd (dec'd), who being first duly qualified according to law maketh oath that her husband Thomas Byrd, aforesaid died on the 13th day of May 1835 and that previous to his death, he had attended the County Courts at Hillsboro as many as two or three times, for the purpose of establishing his claim to a pension, under Act of June 1832.

Paul A. Haralson Letter (15 December 1842)

Letter written by Paul Anderson Haralson (1798-1852) 15 December 1842 to his wife Leannah Herndon Graves Haralson (1803-1848). When the letter was written Paul Anderson Haralson was in Yanceyville, Caswell County, North Carolina, and his wife was in Georgia. Her father, referred to in the letter, is Thomas Slade Graves (1775-1847). Her brother is Dr. George Washington Graves, M.D. (1811-1877).

Walnut Cove, North Carolina - Mrs. Patricia Phillips Marshall, 52, died unexpectedly at her home early Saturday morning, September 4, 2010. She was born May 26, 1958 in Canton, Ohio and spent her childhood in North Canton, Ohio. She graduated from The Ohio State University with a BA in history in 1980 and from Eastern Illinois University with a MA degree in historical administration in 1982. After spending nine years as curator and educator at the Georgia Museum of Agriculture, she accepted a position as curator of decorative arts at the North Carolina Museum of History in 1992. In 2007 she was also assigned the responsibility of being curator of the North Carolina Executive Mansion. Both institutions placed considerable responsibilities on Patricia and she served each of them and the citizens of North Carolina with outstanding professionalism, expertise and personal consideration.
